<Voices from the particpants>
・I feel satisfied with whole START program in China. CCU students helped me to stay in China.
・What I felt through this program was the warmth of the people. The most memorable experience for me was that I made friends with the teachers who led us from Hiroshima University, the teachers from Changchun University, the students from various countries, and above all, the students from Hiroshima University, regardless of nationality or age.
・The words I heard from a professor at Changchun University, “Everyone has some kind of disability,” changed my way of thinking, as I had previously taken a step back and looked at people with disabilities.
・It was such a wonderful experience that I never wanted to leave China, even though it was only for 10 days.
・It was a valuable experience for me to learn about different cultures and values, and to communicate actively in English.
・I was very moved by the singing by the visual impaired students and the dancing by the hearing impared students.
・I was surprised that English was not so common at all in China.
・While I felt the economic development such as tall buildings and the like as I spent time in the city, I also sensed a great deal of economic disparity, such as the presence of homeless people.
・Hearing that they are expanding their possibilities by challenging themselves rather than limiting their own possibilities, I felt that it would be a shame to give up on things without trying, regardless of whether or not they have a disability.
・I was impressed by the words of a professor at Changchun University who said that people with hearing and visual impairments are not handicapped, but that all human beings are creatures with imperfections in some way.
・At Changchun University, where both visually and hearing impaired students are enrolled, the facilities are fully barrier-free, and I felt INCLUSION from where all people are at the university.
・I was most impressed by the opportunity to interact with local people and university students.
・I felt the word “symbiosis” in the way the people with disabilities and our supporter students actively mediated between themselves and provided necessary support without hesitation. It was a scene that I was not familiar with in my surroundings, so I felt diversity.
・Before I came to Japan, I was worried that I might get into trouble because I am Japanese due to political problems, but in fact, I did not have any such problems. I was impressed by the kindness of the students I met on campus and the shopkeepers at the shopping mall.
・Making gyoza (dumplings) on the last day was the most memorable part of the 9 days. Because I could feel the difference of gyoza from Japan and we were able to make gyoza while cooperating with each other.
・I was impressed by the advanced education being provided to students from diverse backgrounds, enabling them to play important roles as members of society. I thought that was exactly inclusion.
・The barrier I felt most during my time in China was the language barrier. In China, most orders are placed electronically, and in many cases, all meal services can be done on a smartphone, but I still felt that it is quite difficult to live alone in a foreign country with a different language.
・It was a very fulfilling nine days. It was the first time for me to travel abroad, but thanks to the great support I received from my guide and local teachers, I was able to spend my time without any worries. The students at Changchun University were also very warm, guiding me to various places and teaching me about many delicious foods.
